Akido Basic Part II

  1. “To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace,” Ueshiba once used this expression. This sentence appears to cover both the philosophical and physical teachings of aikido.
  2. Aikido is also primarily a defense art. Practitioners are taught to use the power and aggression of their attackers against them. Throws, joint lock (especially of the standing variety), as well as pins can be used to do this.
  3. Aikido is usually learned through pre-arranged katas or forms for two. One person is the attacker in teaching (uke), and the other uses aikido techniques (nage) to subdue their attacker. You should note that many of the strikes that are practiced in defense against seem to resemble movements of a sword. This indicates that aikido was a form of weapons defense in the past.
  4. Higher-level students may also practice the actual use of weapons, free sparring and defense against multiple attackers.
  5. Basic Aikido Goals
  6. Aikido’s primary goal is to defend against an aggressor in the safest and most peaceful way possible.
