And, of course, these days the lion’s share of direct response is done online — which means no need to spend millions of dollars on stamps, paper, printing, handling… let alone buildings, warehouses, sales and support staff.

So where does the bulk of all that marketing and promotional money go?

Two places:

  1. Toward attracting new customers…

And in both cases, sales letters — and copywriters — play a massive role!

That’s because “words” are the greatest leverage point for any direct-response company.

The sales letter a business sends out to its customers MUST convey the right message… say the right things… be structured in the right way… and be written to make the prospective buyer want to take action.

Otherwise, millions of dollars can get left on the table.

This money is possible for skilled copywriters because of one thing:

In direct response, sales letters are the engines that drive revenue and profits…

And the difference between a good letter and a great one can be millions of dollars in profits for a company.

Think about it…

You’re a marketer wanting to offer a $500-per-year newsletter subscription to your 200,000 customers.

So, you hire an average copywriter and pay him or her $5,000 to write it, with a 3% royalty on sales.

And the “average” letter written by that “average” copywriter generates an “average” one half of one percent response — 1,000 orders at $500, which equals $500,000 in sales.

Not bad, considering that sales letter cost you nothing to send, aside from what you paid the copywriter.

But let’s say a highly skilled copywriter writes a letter that generates a strong 2% response…

Now instead of 1,000 orders at $500, you have 4,000 sales…

And instead of $500,000 in revenue, you bring in $2,000,000!

The marketer is thrilled…

But what about the copywriters in each of these cases?

The average copywriter pocketed $5,000 to write the letter, plus a 3% royalty on the $500,000 in sales his letter generated — which equals $15,000.

That’s one letter — $20,000.

Pretty good, right?

But the more skilled writer — he or she did much better.

That’s because skilled copywriters can command higher up-front fees to write the letter — in this case, more like $10,000 to $15,000…

AND higher royalties… typically around 5% in the information publishing world.

So, on $2,000,000 in sales, that more skilled writer pocketed $100,000 on royalties alone — PLUS the $10,000 to $15,000 in up-front writing fees…

For a total of $110,000 to $115,000!

But wait…

It gets a whole lot better!

Because that letter was so successful — the company isn’t just going to use it “once” and throw it away…

They’ll likely use it again… and again… and again — for as long as that letter keeps generating revenue, or another letter comes along and beats it.

And each time that letter get used…

The copywriter gets paid royalties…

So, imagine writing one letter — and racking up as much as $100,000 every time that letter gets sent!

But the copywriter money train doesn’t stop there.

Because your letter was so successful, the marketer who hired you isn’t going to want to lose you to the competition.

So, he’s going to want to “lock you in” for the next letter… and the next one… and the next one…

And instead of $10,000 or $15,000… you might be paid $20,000 up front for your next letter…

Or you might be offered a five-figure monthly retainer, with a deal to write “X” number of letters a year… just to make sure you’re not lost to the competition!

And while that first letter you wrote is still generating millions for your client and paying you hundreds of thousands of dollars in royalties…

You might have written one or two more letters for different products that are generating similar royalties…

Suddenly, you’re in a position where you have a guaranteed income of between $10,000 and $20,000 a month…

And as you continue to write successful letters, you’re seeing royalty checks that can top $200,000… $300,000 each time your letters get sent out!
