Originating as a method of restraint and torture, it has evolved over the last century into an activity that provides emotional, physical, and visual pleasure for participants. Nawashi Murakawa, the Artistic Director of London’s annual festival of the Art of Japanese Rope Bondage, offers historical insights spanning 12,000 years, showcasing how Kinbaku has transformed into a dramatic art form performed worldwide.

This series of ten chapters explores the evolution of rope bondage in the UK, Russia, Canada, and the USA, alongside a contemporary live performance in Tokyo. The concluding section highlights traditional Japanese techniques. Chapters featuring Japanese contributors are presented in both Japanese and English.
