How I Learned More Than 10 Languages With the BDT
When I was a As a child, I was just as far from a polyglot as you could get—I only spoke Italian, my mother tongue.
I learned French and English when I was old enough to go to school. As most people forced to learn, I was forced to study. a Language a Classroom setting was not the best for me. I felt uninspired and lost in the class.
My parents hired an English tutor to work at my home. The tutor showed me that language wasn’t just a boring subject at school. a means to learn about and explore all sorts of interesting things, like movies, books, and—of course—people!
This led me to a fascination with natural, authentic content in language to learn languages. I would be fascinated by the Bidirectional Translation method, and this fascination led me to an epiphany.
I decided one day to learn German by myself. I was a sucker for authentic content, but I did not know how to begin learning German in that way. Instead, I tried to learn the language by following the traditional route.-Old-fashioned method, using dictionaries and an older grammar book. Boring!
I was eventually so discouraged, that I almost gave up. I was fortunately able to stumble upon this website before all that happened. a Commercial for a German audiocassette course that claimed to teach German using authentic dialogues and natural speech.
Eureka! This was exactly the type of content in natural language that I needed to get started. a beginner. These dialogues were in German as it is spoken in real life. They are infinitely more fascinating than word lists or verb tables.
It was interesting to me that I could remember words and phrases much better if I translated German dialogues into Italian. It was even better if I translated my Italian translation into German a I was able to recall even more a few days later!
Gradually, I found that this system of taking natural dialogues in German and translating them in two directions wasn’t just helping me remember words and phrases—it was helping me think in my target language!
This allowed me to learn every German language in my audio course. I was able to complete the course within a An year a I found that half the time I had spent learning German, I was able have confident, natural conversations with German people.
This was my concern at the time. a fluke. I tried it again with Spanish.
So I bought a Spanish audio course. I used my bidirectional translation technique to it. Yes, fluency was achieved in one year.
Over the years, I used the BDT in more languages, including Dutch, Swedish and Russian.
The method has proven to be reliable time and again. I was able use the BDT to construct. a You will quickly become fluent in any language if you have a solid foundation.
